Budapest, the capital of caves

The Hungarian capital Budapest is the only capital city in the world that has caves of significant size and length under its buildings and streets.
More than two hundred caves can be found on the Buda side of the city. These caves also occupy a special place in the world because of their unusual thermal water development.

The hydrothermal caves of Budapest were created by the same thermal springs that feed the famous spas of the capital.

A short history of caving

Since prehistoric times, people have used caves as a place of refuge. However, it was not until the 18th century that certain scientists began to take a serious interest in the underground environment. Édouard Alfred Martel is recognised as the founding father of modern speleology, which he initiated with his career as a caver in 1888.

Curiosity about speleology was transformed into a real science. The study of the origin of caves, rocks, water circulation and topography, archaeology and others, are all disciplines encountered underground.

Participants’ reviews after their caving adventure in Budapest:

Pierre, Apr 2022: ”First experience for us in caving. We were looking for adventure and to challenge ourselves. We loved the time spent with Syllat, our guide, whom we recommend to everyone. He loves his job, and it shows. Very kind, funny and with a lot of knowledge. Thank you for everything Syllat! ”

Elneris, Dec 2021: ”Great unusual experience. The guides were really great and very funny. The group was not all sporty, they really took the time to help everyone. You don’t have to be afraid of getting dirty, of being in a confined space but the experience is unique. I highly recommend it”.
