The Escape game (or escape room) is a game that allows all audiences, young and old, to spend a fun, joyful and stimulating moment, away from everyday life. So take advantage of your stay in the Hungarian capital to discover the best escape rooms in Budapest!
With more than 100 escape rooms, Budapest is the European capital of this activity! Every year we discover and test escape rooms in Budapest: it’s time to share our experiences in 2024!. But just before, for the novices, here are some information to discover and understand the escape games.
Concept of the Escape Game:
Escape Games, also called Escape Rooms, are life-size escape games: you are locked in several rooms for 1 hour and have to find clues, solve riddles to get out as quickly as possible before the end of the time limit. You can participate in teams of 2 to 8 participants. The organizer, called ‘Game master’ can help you at any time thanks to a camera monitoring. You don’t need any specific physical or intellectual skills to play. Thinking, collaboration, imagination, surprises and laughter await you!
History of the escape game:
The first physical escape game appeared in 2007 in Japan in Kyoto. It was a great success and the concept developed in Asia, before conquering Europe: the first one opened in Budapest in 2011 at Para Park.
Tips for the escape game:
- Before the game starts and you enter the first room, the ‘Game master’ will tell you how the game works and give you recommendations. This is an opportunity to ask him for example if a clue is only used once? is the use of force to open or move an object required? (usually not!)
- Observe and search every corner: keys, objects, codes are often hidden in the decor. Don’t hesitate to have several people inspect the same space.
- It’s a team game: divide the tasks, communicate regularly because sharing your knowledge and your points of view will help you to solve the riddles.
Language for escape games in Budapest:
The vast majority of the rooms offer rooms where the written clues are in Hungarian and English. Your game master also speaks Hungarian and English.
What is a game master?
The game master is the organiser who will follow you throughout the game. Thanks to cameras and microphones in each room, he can help you at any time if you ask him (for example if you are stuck on a puzzle).
When you book an escape game on the website of the room, inform the organiser of the language you want (English for example) if it is not requested.
Important: there is an emergency button in each room to allow any participant to leave at any time.
Are escape games OK for kids ?
Some escape games allow participants of all ages, others only from 14 years old. In all cases, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. We recommend a minimum age of 10 years old for maximum engagement and understanding and we do not recommend rooms with horror themes to young kids.
Now it’s time to discover our selection of escape games in Budapest! We have tested more than 20 escape rooms in Budapest over the years and have thus established this selection by taking into account different criteria (creativity, decor, but also price, reception and accessibility of the address).
Here is our 2024 selection of escape rooms in Budapest:
